Email from custom domain?

I have a new MayFirst account, although I have set up many websites over the years on other services. Glad to be here!

I can see that it is possible to setup myaccount@mail.mayfirst.org as a mailbox. I can also set up a forwarder info@customdomain.example, which forwards incoming email to that mailbox.

It isn’t clear to me whether I can send email from info@customdomain.example. On other services, I’m able to create email accounts at my own domain, but it seems like that isn’t quite possible here? Or, is that an additional add-on option we could pay more dues to have access to?

Hi there,

Thanks for this question. I’ve just added an additional section to our general email at May First explanation page to address these questions.

Essentially sending email on behalf of your domain requires that you both have the correct DNS records configured for your domain and that you have properly configured your email client/app to send mail through our servers with the correct “from” address also known as “sender identity”.

That’s very helpful - thank you!

I updated our registrar to use the MayFirst nameservers, and that has propagated, so our SSL now shows as enabled.

Checking our DNS config here, I see what appear to be the appropriate records for MX, DMARC, and DKIM. I don’t see the SPF entry, though, so should I add that, following the instructions you linked to?

Apologies for the confusion. While everyone refers to them as SPF records there is actually no official DNS record type called SPF. The accepted practice is to use the more generic TXT type DNS record and insert your Sender Policy Framework data into it. This is what the internet generally refers to as SPF records.

TXT records can be used for many different things. Unfortunately our current control panel interface won’t show you the value/data of your TXT records when viewing the list. You will need to press the edit button to see the value of any TXT type records, (you can back out or close without making any changes) and if you see that the text field begins with “v=spf1” that is an SPF record. Make sure you only have one SPF record for your domain.

I really appreciate that you were able to ask your question here in a public forum without revealing any private or personal data. You can always email support requests to support @ mayfirst.org to have a direct and more private back and forth.
