Jitsi and Closed Caption Question

In addition to being a (new) MayFirst member, I am a member of Techies for Reproductive Justice. There was a question on our little tech discussion Slack about alternatives to Zoom that offer auto closed caption. I mentioned May First’s Jitsi as a service that has that working. But then I experimented and it seems like vanilla Jitsi doesn’t provide that.

T4RJ was curious about what you did to get that working. Would you be willing to share?

I think T4RJ may end up just joining MayFirst since I don’t think we want to rebuild the infrastructure ourselves, but it was requested I ask anyways since now we are curious.

Thank you for any information you can provide!

Hi @jsimkins - Welcome to the May First forums :).

Our setup is described on our admin wiki.

In short: we run the Jitsi Meet Jigasi service (which allows for an external audio only participant to join a meeting) and hook that up with Skynet which is the Jitsi Meet LLM API. With this setup, we can ensure that the audio content never leaves our network, but still benefit from the LLM. It took a bit of work to get working correclty, but is fairly well documented.

Hi Jamie,

Thank you for the quick and detailed response! That’s an impressive setup, and my guess is that we will end up joining to benefit from it.
