I’m working on a project to get a community-owned platform setup for a non-profit that organizes food sovereignty work in the Hudson Valley and New York City region (CSAs, mutual aid, education, food pantries, etc). There’s a whole long-winded design doc describing the whole concept, but TL;DR: I’m looking to host a few lightweight services like Grist and maybe a few individual instances of farmOS (Drupal distro, nothing too heavy), with the intent to grow slowly and host more free software tools over time that the community can direct the development of.
I know MFMT has no aspirations to becoming a service provider (per home page), so it’s totally cool if this is outside the group’s scope, but since I was given to believe there were some MFMT people and hardware in the general vicinity, I thought it would be in keeping with the spirit of tech sovereignty to see if there’s capacity to host a VPS for that kind of project, or even get more involved if there’s interest.
I’m also appreciative of any recommendations for cooperative VPS hosting in the Northeast region or not too far away in the continental US. I think the Capsul folks or Electric Embers are next down the list, if they’d have capacity, but MFMT was my choice!
I work mostly out in the open, so feel free to comment here, but also don’t hesitate to DM or email me at jamie@runrig.org if you’d rather (and you’re not a bot! ).
Thanks for posting @jgaehring ! it sounds like a great project. This project would be very welcome as a member of May First, and we do have VPS options as part of our membership (although they are more expensive than are typical shared hosting memberships). We have a dues calculator here if you want to see what it would cost: May First Membership Dues Calculator | May First Movement Technology Just check the “Virtual Private Server” option towards the end.
And, we can see if any other members respond here who might be interested in participating. I live in Brooklyn - but alas, I don’t have the bandwidth to really help beyond my duties with May First. But there may be others who are interested.
As for other places to host - you might consider Koumbit (they are a worker coop based in Montreal).
Oh great! Yea, I assume more for VPS, but I’m pursuing some funding, atm, which should help w/ hosting costs + dev. I would love a chunk of that to go somewhere aligned on cooperative principles. Plus if there’s any other form of material support ( or ) that could be directed May First’s way as a byproduct – e.g., if there’s something you’d like to do that would also directly serve this project and feed back into your general infra, I’d love to make that happen. But then, I shouldn’t count those unhatched chicks just yet.
Thanks for the links! I forgot about that dues calculator for a moment, but that will be very helpful in putting a final budget together for my proposal. And Koubit is totally new to me and looks great! If this project works out (again, ), I hope I can help other locales set up something similar, and no doubt Canadians these days wouldn’t mind a server that doesn’t cross the US border, sadly. So I’ll def add this to my bookmarks!
From one Jamie in the Big Apple to another, good luck out there, and thanks again!
